5 DIY Halloween costumes inspired by this year’s highest-grossing movies

Halloween is less than a month away, which can only mean one thing: It’s DIY costume time! Sure, you could go out and buy one that’s readymade, but part of the fun of dressing up is getting crafty and creative.

To help inspire you, here are five (fairly easy) DIY costume ideas inspired by this year’s highest-grossing movies. Best of all, all the necessary supplies can be found at Value Village, so you don’t have to break the bank to look like a badass superhero!

Guardians of the Galaxy (Gamora)
Start with black leggings, boots and a couple of studded belts, then add a green long-sleeved shirt. Take a black tank top and cut out portions to be replaced with see-through fabric panels and layer it on top of your green shirt. Add a long brown wig (you can dye the ends red) and green face paint and you’ll be ready to go!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Captain America)
Being a superhero is easier than it sounds! You’ll need a blue long-sleeved shirt, as well as a red and white shirt, which you can cut up. Prepare a star and stripes and sew them onto the blue top. Finish the look off with blue leggings and a homemade shield, which requires nothing more than a snow sled and paint.

Maleficent (Maleficent)
Angelina Jolie’s take on Maleficent can be achieved with a black dress, black cape, black boots and purple lipstick. Pick up a crow in the props aisle and bring it all together by styling your hair into two horns. Alternatively, you can mould horns out of clay (or Styrofoam covered with fabric) and attach them to a headband with black duct tape.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (Mystique)
Think blue. A LOT of blue. Rather than covering your whole body with blue paint, opt for the more comfortable and time-saving option by buying a blue leotard or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt in the same hue. Add a red wig and paint your face, neck and hands blue and you’ll be the talk of the party.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Gwen Stacy)
Think back-to-school and search for a pleated schoolgirl skirt and a white lab coat. Stay true to character by labelling it with the Oscorp logo (you can do so with a sharpie) and add a spider doodle or pick up a plastic spider to wear as a pin or necklace. Complete the look with a shoulder-length blonde wig and glasses.
