Donald Trump posts Muhammad Ali tribute, gets ripped apart on Twitter
It all began when Trump tweeted:
Fun fact: Trump and Ali had a friendship going back almost four decades and Ali even attended Trump's wedding back in 2005.
Muhammad Ali is dead at 74! A truly great champion and a wonderful guy. He will be missed by all!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 4, 2016
Last year, however, the boxing great issued a statement titled “Presidential Candidates Proposing to Ban Muslim Immigration to the United States”, in which he wrote: “We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda.” He never called out Trump, but most assumed that's who he was targeting.
Whether his message was heartfelt or not, Trump's tweet didn't stand a chance and was soon innundated with responses like:
@realDonaldTrump Nice exclamation point on that first sentence.— Chris Sacca (@sacca) June 4, 2016
.@realDonaldTrump you are the epitome of everything he despised— Brian Gaar (@briangaar) June 4, 2016
@realDonaldTrump Would Ali have gotten a special exemption from your Muslim ban?— David Hobby (@strobist) June 4, 2016
.@realDonaldTrump Muhammad Ali must have been sad to see your anti-Muslim bigotry but perhaps relieved to leave b/f you could act on it. RIP— Mrs. Betty Bowers (@BettyBowers) June 4, 2016
Do you think Trump is a hypocrite for remembering Ali?
@realDonaldTrump You know the great Ali was Muslim right ??— Shirley Lewis (@Gmsingers) June 4, 2016
