Amy Winehouse will be wailing for her "Blaa-aa-ke Incarcerated" for another four-and-a-half months, at least. The troubled pop singer's equally troubled husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was convicted today for assault and “perverting the course of justice.” (Oh, British people! Even your legal jargon is adorable!)
The judge sentenced Fielder-Civil to 27 months in jail. He’s already served nine months and, since most British prisoners serve approximately half of their sentence for this type of crime, he could be back with his nearly emphysemic sweetheart by December, reports the Telegraph.
The sentencing comes after Fielder-Civil pleaded guilty to assaulting pub owner James King in 2006. He also confessed to trying to buy King’s silence with $400,000 US. According to the Telegraph, King, 36, was so badly hurt in the incident that he had plates put in his face to help fix a broken cheekbone.
Although Winehouse has often appeared at Fielder-Civil's previous court dates, adding unintentional entertainment value to the proceedings, she wasn't around for today's sentencing. Good thing, too, because ol' Ames would've likely started throwing baby mice at the judge when he reamed her husband out in court.
Judge David Radford reprimanded Fielder-Civil, saying he acted in a "gratuitous, cowardly and disgraceful way," reports the Associated Press.
Prior to sentencing, Fielder-Civil's lawyer, Jeremy Dein, argued that his client's sentence should be suspended or limited to the nine months he'd already served. According to Dein, Fielder-Civil and Winehouse were hoping to get back on the straight-and-narrow together.
"It's their ambition to divorce themselves from hard drugs, not to separate themselves from each other... He knows that if he fails, an appointment with calamity awaits, not just for him but for his wife as well," he said, reports the BBC.
