Did a Text Message Cause the Chris Brown/Rihanna Fight?

February 25, 2009

What exactly went on between Rihanna and Chris Brown Saturday night isn’t yet 100 per cent clear, but several reports are saying it all came down to a booty call.

According to multiple media outlets, the fight that kept both stars from the Grammys erupted when Chris Brown received a text message from another woman.

"He got a booty call. He got a text," a source told the New York Daily News. "Rihanna saw it and she got upset. They started to argue. She got out of the car. He wanted her to get back in, so he grabbed her. ... She pulled away. That's when she's told people he hit her."

A source from Brown's camp backed up the text-message story to Bossip.com, but is claiming that Rihanna was responsible for starting the fight. "She went ballistic and began to 'beat the sh*t' out of Chris (while driving). She was so uncontrollable, that Chris began to fight back in self defense, which ensued the fight."

According to further reports, however, the next chapter of the fight moved into horrifying territory – involving death threats and the 20-year-old Rihanna being left unconscious at the scene.

E! News says that Rihanna and Brown began their bickering soon after leaving Clive Davis' pre-Grammy bash. At one point, Brown pulled his Lamborghini over into an L.A. park. Rihanna then reportedly snatched the keys to Brown's car, throwing them outside. According to E!’s source, who is involved in the police investigation, Brown then became enraged, reportedly saying, "I'm going to kill you," before choking his singer girlfriend. Rihanna reportedly told the police source that the attack caused her to lose consciousness, and by the time she came to, Brown was gone.

Residents contacted 911 after hearing a woman's cries.

"It mostly recorded the sound of a screaming woman," LAPD Detective Deshon Andrews told the New York Post.

As per yesterday's reports, police found the singer in rough shape, with contusions on both sides of her face, a bloody nose, broken lip and bite marks on her hands and fingers. Rihanna allowed police to take photos of her injuries at the scene and also at the hospital.

"She looked distraught and in a lot of pain. Her eyes were closed because she was looking down," a police insider who saw the photos told People.

Rihanna recently cancelled her Feb. 20 birthday bash, as well as an upcoming concert in Malaysia, and according to the New York Daily News, the singer is currently staying with a close girlfriend while her family is on their way to be with her.

"Chris has been trying to contact her," adds the New York Daily News' source. "So far she hasn't taken his call."

And it's probably safe to say that two members of Brown's celebrity social circle won't be taking his calls, either. Jay-Z, who is credited with discovering Rihanna, apparently "hit the roof" after hearing the news, says Us Weekly. A friend of Jay-Z's told the mag that "Chris is a walking dead man. He messed with the wrong crew." And yesterday, Rihanna's former tour mate Kanye West let the world know he was "devastated" by what happened. As he said on Ryan Seacrest's radio show: "I feel like, just as a person, I don't care how famous she is, or even if she worked at McDonald's, that should have never happened. It should never come to that place."
