TIFF Gets Set to Whip It

July 28, 2009

Is it just us, or is this year's Toronto International Film Festival starting to sound like it might rock extra hard this year? Organizers announced this year's galas and special presentations on Tuesday, and the list is sure to thrill movie lovers (and celeb stalkers).

Making their world premieres are Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It!, starring Ellen Page as a teen misfit who finds happiness in an all-girls roller derby league, and Joel and Ethan Coen's new film, A Serious Man

Also joining the lineup is Perrier's Bounty, starring Cillian Murphy and Jim Broadbent, Michael Moore's new doc, Capitalism: A Love Story, and two galas: The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, starring Robin Wright Penn, and Dorian Gray, starring Ben Barnes and TIFF regular Colin Firth.

But it's not all good news. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, will also be at this year's fest, which starts Sept. 10. We admit that we're mildly obsessed with the trailer for this Werner Herzog-directed flick, but that's only because it seems that Cage is trying to singlehandedly make "Most Wildly Overacted" an official Oscar category.
