Mischa Barton Denies Breakdown, Blames Wisdom Teeth. Do the Teeth Tell You to Burn Things, Mischa?

August 28, 2009

In her first interview since her highly-publicized breakdown and subsequent hospitalization, Mischa Barton told Time Out New York that it was all due to a very dire situation... with her teeth. Well, at least she's not tossing around the "exhaustion" excuse.

Barton told the magazine that the incident came about due to complications that arose after getting her wisdom teeth removed shortly before filming began on her new show, Beautiful Life.

"I went through a terrible surgery—a wisdom tooth surgery, all four removed. It was a nightmare," said the 23-year-old. "I've never had surgery before—it all went wrong and I had to have a second surgery and it almost delayed shooting because it was a nightmare to me, because I couldn't deal with the thought of not getting there on time. So with the travel, and surgery and prep for the show—it was hell."

Barton was also hesitant to call her episode a "nervous breakdown," insisting that she was just a bit depressed and unable to deal with the physical pain.

"I'm not sure I'm capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad. It didn't last that long. It was more about the pain," she said. "I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain. I started getting migraines."

And, as we all know, Cedars-Sinai's psych ward has a habit of checking patients who are simply suffering from migraines.

The actress also expressed some animosity toward her mother, rolling her eyes and admitting that her mom was the one who forced Barton into the psychiatric evaluation.

"The funny thing is, if all this happened in New York, no one would care," said Barton. "New York lets you be who you are, and people aren't as judgmental."

Lucky for us, we're nowhere near New York. Let the petty judgment begin!
