Kate Winslet has won $40,000 and an apology in a libel suit against the U.K. Daily Mail after the newspaper had the temerity to suggest she isn't lazy. Those bastards!
According to People, Winslet filed suit against the Daily Mail when the paper alleged that the unfairly gorgeous Brit was lying about her exercise regime before the 2009 awards show season.
"I have stopped exercising and am eating whatever I want," Winslet had told reporters in January.
In response, the Daily Mail's Liz Jones wrote: "I can see the fact she has 'gone for the burn' etched on her woefully drawn features. She might say it is down to 20 minutes of gentle Pilates a day but, trust me, it ain't. I've done that amount of Pilates for years and I do not have anything approaching Ms. Winslet's enviable muscle tone."
Perhaps not, but Winslet's DNA appears to have been created by unicorns and angels. She could eat a donut and her body would probably consider it exercise.
The High Court in London ruled yesterday that the Daily Mail story was full of baloney and ordered the paper to pay damages and Winslet's legal costs.
"I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy," Winslet, 33, said in a statement. "I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime, and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise."
