In "why is this newsworthy?" news, Drew Barrymore clarified her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Long yesterday after several media outlets reported that they had rekindled their romance. Although they broke up in July 2008 (because, let's face it, Barrymore is at least five levels above Long on the hotness scale), the two actors have looked very chummy together at recent events, including the premiere of Barrymore's new HBO movie, Grey Gardens.
"We're dear friends. I guess people find it a little confusing. I totally understand," 34-year-old Barrymore said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday. "It seems like, 'What is the deal with them?' But we just adore each other. We're in each others' lives and we're friends."
Asked how she'd feel if Long began dating other women, Barrymore somehow didn't burst out laughing.
"I just hope that they are fantastic people, because he's a great guy and he deserves the most happiness," she said.
In fact, things are going so swimmingly in the ex-couple's friendship that Long and Barrymore are even set to work together this summer on Going the Distance, a rom-com about a couple trying to overcome obstacles in their long-distance relationship. Remember when Long played the dorky, annoying kid on Ed? If you had told us then that he would eventually find a career as a leading man in romantic comedies, we probably would have had you committed.
