Jessica Simpson Called an Insult to Train Wrecks

August 29, 2008

Jessica Simpson's transformation from mediocre pop star to mediocre country singer has hit another snag – notably, the critics hate her performances. After the 28-year-old's concert in Niagara Falls earlier this week, music critic John Law took Simpson to task for her disappointing show.

"It might be unfair calling Jessica Simpson's show at the Avalon Ballroom Wednesday a train wreck. At some point, a train knows where it's going," Law wrote in The Niagara Falls Review.

Wow. Don't hold back – tell us how you really feel.

"Simpson, on the other hand, has jumped the rails from pop to country like she's trying on a new coat at Macy's," Law continued. "This cowgirl seems completely lost and desperate for approval on stage."

Simpson arguably brought on the harsh criticism herself, spending several minutes between songs to explain what each one was about in her trademark oblivious style.

For instance, Law reports, before she sang "Do You Know," a song written by Dolly Parton, Simpson described how bad she felt when she messed up performing "9 to 5" in front of Parton.

"I told my daddy I'm never going to sing again," Simpson told the audience. "I'm going to ignore this gift God gave me."

Oh, if only she had meant it.

Even Simpson's gingham concert attire came under fire from Go Fug Yourself blogger Heather Cox, who accused the singer of pandering to country fans.

"Country fans are not idiots; it is wrong to assume that, just because you wear something that looks like you stitched it together from picnic-basket liners during a really boring hayride, they will stop booing you and start hugging and toasting marshmallows," wrote Cox. "These people will not appreciate being talked-down-to – or styled-down-to, as it were – by a girl who thought tuna was chicken and, worse, thought acting stupid made her adorable."

Wait, wait – "acting" stupid?
