Jonathan Rhys Meyers Arrested After Drunken Airport Brawl

June 25, 2009

Irish hunk Jonathan Rhys Meyers may play King Henry VIII on The Tudors, but it was the actor who seemed to lose his head last Saturday, getting arrested after drunkenly challenging French police to a fight.

Agence France Presse that the trouble began in Le Quotidien bar in Charles de Gaulle airport, when a server refused to give Rhys Meyers any more alcohol, claiming the 31-year-old actor looked a bit "tight," as Ernest Hemingway might say. Rhys Meyers then reportedly got into a screaming match with the bar manager and, when another employee tried to break things up, the actor allegedly punched the worker.

According to the U.K. Sun, Rhys Meyers was just as unruly when authorities arrived, bragging about his wealth, throwing money on the floor and telling the officers: "You wanna hit me? Hit me!"

After being detained by police, Rhys Myers was later released, but has been ordered to appear in a Paris court in September on charges of willful violence, outrage, hitting and threatening death.

Meyers has had previous problems with alcohol, having been arrested and charged with drunk and disorderly conduct in Dublin in 2007. He has gone to rehab three times, in 2004, 2005 and most recently in February 2009.
