In news that will surely make every indie music snob gasp in delight, Zooey Deschanel is betrothed to Death Cab for Cutie frontman Benjamin Gibbard. Only a few hours before the news broke, some celebrity news sites reported that 28-year-old Deschanel was engaged to AFI bassist Hunter Burgen, but Us Weekly and MTV News confirmed this morning that the actress had indeed said yes to 32-year-old Gibbard’s proposal.
"Zooey was swept off her feet, and Ben is so excited," a source close to the couple told Us Weekly.
All we can say is: thank goodness The O.C. was cancelled two years ago, because if it were still on, Seth Cohen would never shut up about this.
Normally, the engagement would signal that Gibbard had sold out, but in addition to starring roles in Hollywood blockbusters like Elf and Yes Man, Deschanel has amassed plenty of indie cred with She & Him, her critically-acclaimed band with singer/songwriter M. Ward. Their debut album, Volume One, was included on several "Best of 2008" lists, as was Death Cab's last album, Narrow Stairs – so it's safe to say that fans of either Deschanel or Gibbard will soon get into fervent Internet debates over whether their music was better pre- or post-nuptials and which half of the couple is to blame.
