Nicole Richie Sentenced to Four Days in Slammer

July 27, 2007

Nicole Richie, everyone's favourite stick insect, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence today (July 27) and was sentenced to four days in jail, three years of probation and alcohol education, People reports. Considering how plastered she was when she was arrested, you'd think Richie already knew quite a bit about alcohol, but who are we to question the California penal system?

Richie, 25, was arrested in December 2006 after driving in the wrong direction on a Los Angeles freeway. She admitted to smoking marijuana and taking Vicodin a few hours earlier to ease the pain of her pre-menstrual cramps. She had also been convicted of a DUI in 2003.

Los Angeles County Commissioner Steven Lubell told Richie, "Someone could've gotten killed. You need to understand that driving under the influence is extremely dangerous."

But she needed to be intoxicated to deal with her PMS! You can't expect her to drive with cramps. What are a few lives when Richie is experiencing mild discomfort?

Richie must complete her four days in jail by Sept. 28. The usual minimum sentence for a repeat DUI offence is five days, but that can be cut to four if the person agrees to three years of probation. However, we prefer to think that it's because Nicole is too tiny to count as a whole person.
