Twilight continues to parlay tween hysteria into big bucks as the first day DVD sales of the vampire saga were huge.
The Twilight DVD sold more than three million copies on its release Saturday, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Fans flocked to U.S. retail chains Hot Topic and Wal-Mart on Friday night for special midnight DVD release parties. The brisk sales made it one of the top five best-selling DVDs of the past two years, joining big sellers like The Dark Knight and the Transformers.
"We are incredibly appreciative that Twilight fans came out to once again support this film at our midnight events across the nation," Summit home entertainment president Steve Nickerson said Sunday.
Twilight, based on Stephanie Meyers’ best-selling series of novels, has raked in $373 million US in worldwide box office since its release on Nov. 21. Two sequels are already in the works, with New Moon scheduled for a Nov. 20 bow and Eclipse set for June 30, 2010.
