Usher didn't go through with his plans to say "Yeah!" to his pregnant fiancee this weekend. The R&B singer and Tameka Foster cancelled their wedding on Saturday (July 28), just hours before they were set to walk down the aisle.
No reason was given for the mysterious change of heart. Usher's publicist released a statement, saying, "The wedding ceremony for Usher Raymond ... and Tameka Foster was cancelled. No additional information will be given regarding the circumstances of the cancellation, but we hope the privacy of this matter will be respected."
According to the New York Post, high-profile guests, including Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Jay-Z, were hastily called and informed not to show up.
Although the singer offered no official explanation for the nixed nuptials, sources speculate his mother/former manager, Jonnetta Patton, did not approve of the union, nor did his godfather, Broadway star Ben Vereen, who had reportedly been cut from the guest-list.
Usher's relationship with Foster, a 36-year-old divorced mother of three, has been plagued with controversy. The 28-year-old singer defended his pregnant fiancee two weeks ago in an open letter to People, writing, "I am happy, excited, completely clear and independent on my direction, feelings, decisions and I am NOT BEING LED. Some media and bloggers have been totally intrusive, they have misconstrued aspects of my personal life and, because of this, my 'true' fans are not sure about what is fact and what is fiction. There is a difference between stating an opinion versus drawing a conclusion that is incorrect."
Usher's publicist would not comment on whether the wedding will be rescheduled, or even if the couple is still together. Whatever the case, this marital mess should give him plenty of songwriting fodder. Look for "Confessions: Part III" in stores soon.
