Nicole Kidman Has the Good Sense to be Ashamed of Australia

January 9, 2009

Nicole Kidman has a lot to be embarrassed about – her marriage to Tom Cruise, The Stepford Wives, her face's increasing immobility – but, for the first time, the actress is taking responsibility for one of her failures. In an interview with Sydney radio station 2dayFM, the blonde actress admitted that she is embarrassed by Australia. (The Baz Luhrmann film, we mean; not the country. Although, come to think of it...)

"I can't look at this movie and be proud of what I've done," Kidman said of Australia. "I sat there, and I looked at Keith [Urban] and went, 'Am I any good in this movie?'"

Considering that her face displays a range of motion usually reserved for polar ice caps, we're going to go out on a limb and say no.

The 41-year-old told the radio station that she doesn't like to watch her performances and only went to the Australia premiere because of Lurhmann. When it became clear that the film would be both a critical and commercial failure, Kidman and Urban fled to the actual Australia to avoid the bad buzz.

"We ran because I didn't want to read anything. I didn't want to know," said the Oscar winner.

Lest her comments be misconstrued as criticism of her costars, Kidman did clarify that she was only mortified by her own performance.

"I thought Brandon Walters and Hugh Jackman were wonderful," she said. "It's just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all."

On the bright side, her face is incapable of expression emotion anyway, so it's not like she was at risk of popping any of the stitches.
