Ashton Kutcher to Save the World, One Spoiled Celebrity at a Time

March 10, 2008

Remember those odd pictures of Paris Hilton shopping with a spiritual guru that infiltrated the Net last week like a super-resistant computer virus? What about those photos a few weeks earlier of Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley picking up baby supplies on Robertson Blvd? Well, celeb watchers, you can stop stockpiling canned goods and water for fear that the escalating absurdity of the rich and the famous is a sign of the coming apocalypse. It turns out they were just a series of elaborate, delayed-reaction pranks for Ashton Kutcher's new reality show, Pop Fiction. Gotcha! (Two weeks later, but hey, man, he still totally gotcha!!)

The show, which premiered on E! Sunday night, is an eight-episode prank series produced by Kutcher and his partner, Jason Goldberg.

Goldberg says the premise is to trick the paparazzi into covering their staged stories, telling USA Today, "Two people going out to eat turns into, 'They're engaged.' It's a feeding frenzy. It's dangerous and it's irresponsible in some cases. We're having fun, but we want to say to people, 'Can you really believe everything you read and see?'"

While we're still trying to wrap our heads around the point of celebrities calling out the evils of huge, media attention-courting spectacles by staging huge, media attention-courting spectacles, we're comforted by Lavigne’s words of wisdom in the premiere episode. "It's so funny, it’s, like, making my butt look bigger! Like, I so look pregnant, are you kidding me?" she giggles while trying on her fat suit, thus making us grateful for a show which finally exposes the profound thought processes of tabloid magnets.

We'd like to point out that we here at Dose.ca didn't cover either Lavigne or Hilton's shopping sprees. (Not because we have a highly attuned journalistic bullshit detector or anything. It's just because that was the day we got Guitar Hero III in the office and were distracted by trying to master the killer solo in "The Number of the Beast.")
