For the three of you Grey’s Anatomy fans out there who still believe the sun rises and sets on Katherine Heigl’s ass, let us present another exhibit in our never-ending “Heigl is a Raging Ingrate” defense.
When asked by the Los Angeles Times’ Gold Derby blog why her name is nowhere to be found on this year’s official Emmy ballot, the holier-than-thou actress proclaimed, "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention.”
Heigl (no doubt captivated by the sound of her own voice), continued: “In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."
Granted, Heigl isn’t wrong in her criticisms of this season’s Grey Anatomy (her character’s repeated attempts to improve her sex life with George were a definite low point). But instead of allowing the Emmy voters to decide this season’s TV victors, Heigl took it upon herself to publicly bitch-slap her own writers.
A show insider tells Entertainment Weekly, "The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material? It's an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place."
While we're all for more Hollywood female power players speak their minds (especially if they don’t occupy a regular spot on The View’s couch), this isn’t the first time Heigl’s statements have come across as more sanctimonious than self-sacrificing. The actress also famously bemoaned the “sexist” nature of Knocked Up, the film that took her from an ensemble TV actress to a movie star who now commands over $6 million US a picture.
Lest Heigl’s head get too big for her Grey’s stethoscope, let us remember how she first landed on our radar: playing a teenage alien on the campy WB drama, Roswell. In case your memory needs jogging, check out this clip of Heigl, sporting a robe and soccer mom ‘do, choosing her wedding night to explain to her new husband (played by Adam Rodriguez, slumming it in a pre-CSI: Miami guest spot), that she’s not from around here. Classic!
