Eva Mendes's Nippy Ad Nipped in the Bud

August 5, 2008

What is a normal response to seeing Eva Mendes naked? "Thank you, Lord," perhaps. "Her butt is nicer than mine, the bitch," definitely. But in the case of U.S. broadcast networks, their reaction is more along the lines of squeezing their eyes shut, sticking their fingers in their ears and yelling, "LA LA LA LA WE CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

E! Online reports that television networks in the U.S. are refusing to air the original version of a commercial for the new CK perfume, Secret Obsession. The saucy spot features black-and-white footage of a scantily-clad Mendes writhing around (with a brief nip-slip – tee hee!) as she whispers such sweet nothings as, "Between love and madness lies obsession."

Ooh, please let us spend money to smell like a creepy stalker! Where do we sign up? Do you want our blood? Take our blood!

Even once Calvin Klein reedited the commercial to be a little less provocative, the networks only agreed to air it after 9 p.m., when most children are already in bed, dreaming about Zac Ephron taking them to prom.

Calvin Klein Inc. president Tom Murry wasn't too shocked at the controversy, noting that this level of trepidation is not out of character for U.S. television networks.

"This development is not entirely a surprise for the U.S. market," said Murry. "We believe the commercial is exceptional and hits the mark for Secret Obsession. We will reach our consumers in the U.S. primarily through the Web site, the print campaign and at point of sale."

You know that somewhere, Brooke Shields is rolling her eyes, saying, "Whatever, Eva, call me when your commercial spawns a child pornography investigation."
