An unpleasant Grammy Awards flashback for you: it was three years ago this week that Chris Brown beat Rihanna to a pulp after a Grammy pre-party, leaving her unconscious and bleeding in their rented sports-car.

As anyone with a radio knows, Brown's situation has evolved since being convicted of felony assault in 2009 -- to the point the pop star will be welcomed back to the Grammys Sunday, playing the same stage as Rihanna.

But just because Brown is in the Grammy spotlight three years after being barred from the show -- and just because he's racking up nominations (three, including best R&B album), and charting a No. 1 record -- doesn't mean the singer has made a full "comeback" to grace.

He's still got his five-year probation sentence to deal with, and the L.A. Times reports that Brown just lost a plea to get off early for good behaviour.

The L.A. Times reports that Superior Court Judge Goerge Lomeli ruled Thursday that Brown, 22, will continue checking in with his probation officer in Virginia for the duration of his sentence.

As part of his sentence, Brown has been required to complete six months' worth of community service, the New York Daily News reports -- tasks including roadside clean-up and graffiti removal -- and he has, so far, finished half of his requirements, in addition to seeking counselling for anger management and domestic violence. As his probation supervisor wrote in a report presented at Thursday's hearing, the singer "has made great strides."

Brown's probation stands, however -- though that presumably won’t affect his ability to make the Grammys Sunday night.

According to the Times, Brown's next progress hearing is scheduled for July 10.
