The nominations for the 69th Annual Golden Globes are here, and we can only assume this year's top honoree is at a complete loss for words. The Artist, the silent movie that charmed at Cannes before doing the same at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, came out of the nominations Thursday morning with six nods -- including recognition for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and acting honours for leads Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. Hollywood dramas The Descendants, starring George Clooney, and Emma Stone and Octavia Davis' The Help, were both recognized with five nods, apiece.

Those two films will both face off in the race for best drama, along with Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball and War Horse -- all films which are represented elsewhere in the nominations. As for The Artist's competition in the category of best comedy or musical, it will compete against 50/50, Carnage, Midnight in Paris, My Week With Marilyn and Bridesmaids. (Though a hit at the box office, Bridesmaids only scored one additional nomination, an acting nod for lead Kristen Wiig.)

George Clooney, who features in two of the films nominated for best drama -- The Descendants and The Ides of March -- finds himself in the privileged position of being nominated in both acting and directing categories (the latter nod being for his work helming political drama The Ides of March). His performance as a widowed father to two teenage daughters in The Descendants scored him a spot in the best actor category -- along with his Ides of March co-star Ryan Gosling, Moneyball's Brad Pitt, Shame's Michael Fassbender and J. Edgar's Leonardo DiCaprio. Dose editors welcome this opportunity for Clooney to extend his allotted screentime during the Golden Globes' telecast.

As for this year's television nominees, past winners including Boardwalk Empire, 30 Rock, Modern Family and Glee were all represented, though newcomers including HBO's Game of Thrones, Claire Danes drama Homeland, FX's American Horror Story and Zooey Deschanel's hit New Girl all broke through with two nominations apiece. British period drama Downton Abbey led the TV nominations with four.

The Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air Jan. 15. A partial list of this year's nominees is posted below. Check out the Golden Globes website for the rest.
