Hollywood award show season officially kicked off Wednesday night with the People's Choice Awards, honouring fan favourites in TV, music and movies. But unlike the other shows, the whole schtick of this one is that winners are judged by popular vote, not by critics or industry associations. That's how movies like Water for Elephants beat out Oscar buzzy flicks like Moneyball or The Help. But on the plus side, we get to swoon over Robert Pattinson's new hair. Yay?

Even though she didn't show up, Katy Perry led the winners with five trophies, including best female music artist and favorite song for "E.T." Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 won four awards, including best movie and favorite ensemble cast.

Organizers said more than 40 million people voted online for their nominees.
