So much for Ashlee Simpson-Wentz taking a break from singing: the 25-year-old is set to destroy the dreams of many musical theatre majors by joining the Broadway cast of Chicago. Those starving artists in New York will have at least a few more weeks of living on ramen and misguided hope.

According to People, the recently axed Melrose Place star is set make her Broadway debut in the role of Roxie Hart, a part she played on the London stage in 2006. Simpson-Wentz will play the part for six weeks, starting in December. So, you know, you might want to postpone that Big Apple trip until February.

Her casting is potentially bad news for anyone who loves Chicago and the theatre, as Simpson-Wentz was reportedly fired from Melrose Place for being unable to act. But then, Chicago has frequently shunned talent for more high-profile stars, such as Kelly Osbourne, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and even Jerry Springer.

Wow this article is totally rude. you haven't even given the poor girl a shot. and obviously if she is going to be in broadway, it must mean they saw something in her. she got great reviews when she played the role in the west end so quit evaluating her.

This is not great at all, as a theatre major, it's shameful that Broadway would stoop so low as to hire a celebrity, who's a nice girl, but has no singing or acting talent whatsoever over a non-celebrity Broadway aspiring actor or actress with actual talent who struggles taking the subway and works at a 9-5 while still making time to struggle going to auditions and works on his craft. This is a disgrace, I don't know what you're talking about. I love Melrose Place, but I'd rather have Ashlee Simpson taint television than taint Broadway, once (and still) the platform for greats such as Angela Lansbury, Bea Arthur, Julie Harris, Liza Minelli. And now...Ashlee Simpson? Wow. Just ... wow.
