Box Office Happy Time! Indiana Jones Isn’t ‘Mr. Big’ Anymore

June 2, 2008

Turns out women like Sex and the City so much, they’ll see a 140-minute episode of it -- and pay to do it. The big screen bow of the HBO series took the top spot at the box office, making a cool $55.7 million US in its opening weekend.

Last week’s champ, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, went a little flaccid in its sophomore week, shrinking to No. 2. The fourth film in the classic franchise brought in $46 million in its second week. Don’t feel bad for ole Indy though, the film has made a friggin’ stupid $217 million in just two weeks.

Opening at No. 3 was The Strangers, a thriller starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. The film managed a strong $20.7 million in its first weekend.

Everyone’s favorite shell-headed superhero Iron Man stayed in the top five, bringing in another $14 million. Winner of the Best Summer Movie So Far award at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, the film has made $276 million in five weeks of release.

Rounding things out was The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, with a third week gross of $13 million. While widely considered short in the box office pants, the film has still made $116 million in three weeks at theaters. With box office, like most things, size appears to be relative.
