Like a hideous alien who regenerates after being totally destroyed by a kickass hero and his friends in their nuclear-powered sea tank, Tom Cruise’s star may once again be on the rise. First, Cruise ensconced himself as one of the heads of resurrected production house, United Artists, and now, Mission: Impossible III has demolished all competition in both the DVD sales and rental charts during its first week in stores, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Sources estimate the release sold 3.7 million units in the week ending Nov. 5, more than either of the previous instalments of the franchise.
M:I 3 scored $11.3 million revenue as a rental, making it No. 1 on Home Media Retailing's chart.
The title sold well in the two next-generation formats (HD DVD, Blu-Ray Disc) as well, moving 20,000 units — making it the highest-selling next-gen title since HD DVD's launch in April.
