The on again-off again Wonder Woman movie is on again for all of you who were wondering (groan!). Producer Joel Silver told IESB.com that the film is still good to go and that writers are currently working on a script.
Silver told IESB.com first-time writers Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland are working on a script that will be an origin story for the Amazonian heroine. He also wouldn’t confirm if he had a director in mind, although hinted he might be considering Speed Racer and The Matrix masterminds the Wachowski brothers, saying that, “Andy Wachowski had an idea on how to open the Wonder Woman film.”
The long rumored film which has been talked about for close to 15 years has had numerous stars “attached” to it, including Sandra Bullock, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lucy Lawless and, more recently, Cobie Smulders, Sophia Bush and Jessica Biel. Also, Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner Joss Whedon had been set to write and direct a version of the film as late as last year but left the project due to creative differences.
In November 2006, Whedon speculated to Entertainment Weekly why the Wonder Woman film is so difficult to get off the ground: "Besides the great origin story, there's nothing from the comics that felt right 100 per cent, no iconic canon story that must be told," he said. "Batman has it made -- he's got the greatest rogues gallery ever, he's got Gotham City. The Bat writes himself. With Wonder Woman, you're writing from whole cloth, but trying to make it feel like you didn't. To make it feel like it's existed for 60 years, even though you're making it up as you go along."
