Deciding that David Cronenberg’s original 1981 horror masterpiece wasn’t good enough, Dimension Films has decided to remake Scanners.
Variety reports Dimension has commissioned Saw II and Saw III director Darren Lynn Bousman to direct the remake with David Goyer (Blade series, co-writer on Batman Begins) taking on the writing chores.
Scanners follows a an underground movement of telepaths known as “scanners,” who can use their abilities to kill—culminating in an exploding head effect that kept many a child up at night in the 1980s. The Cronenberg original put the Canadian director on the cinematic map and was respected for its plot and themes of social paranoia and evolution as much as for its breakthrough special effects.
The film is slated for an early 2008 production start and release later that year.
