Since Fall Out Boy's on "indefinite vacation," the band's Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley are using their newfound free time to do what just about every other rock musician has done in 2009: form a supergroup.
The unexpected twist: Trohman and Hurley are swapping emo for metal and, as Rock Sound reports, they've recruited Anthrax's Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano and Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley for new band, The Damned Things.
There's still no hard evidence of what these guys have been up to -- their MySpace page is sparse at best -- but the band's reportedly written and demoed 15 songs -- which Ian describes as being like "Kyuss meeting Thin Lizzy" -- and has plans to begin recording in December.
"We just started working on songs together and I really dug it," Ian told Rock Sound. "It just felt really good. From there we decided that obviously both of us are pretty busy in our day jobs but let's see what we can do with this. Even if it takes us five years to make a record, why not?"
And Ian admits he had some initial reservations about jamming with two guys known for being in a band infamous for having Mr. Ashlee Simpson as its bass player. "People think of Fall Out Boy and they think of Pete Wentz and Patrick [Stump]," says Ian. "These two guys, man, they're fucking hardcore dudes. Joe writes some amazing riffs. We have this song called 'A Great Reckoning' that I swear to God, this song could be on any Thin Lizzy record. He fucking blew my mind with this song and I just can't wait for people to hear it."
