Gorillaz, Andre 3000 and LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy have delivered, as promised -- and we're hearing their shoe-sponsored collab one day early, at that.
"DoYaThing," a new track by that aforementioned trifecta of pop weirdos, becomes available for free download tomorrow, courtesy Converse.com. (The song is part of the sneaker company's "Three Artists. One Song" campaign.) Thanks to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, however, it's already here (that's it posted below). As for its accompanying music video, Billboard reports that one's expected to debut by the end of February.
Right. Well then, let's enjoy what we can at present -- a skittering four-and-a-half minute Gorillaz song that reminds us just how much we miss Outkast and the dearly departed LCD Soundsystem.
Gorillaz's Damon Albarn starts us off, lackadaisically rapping nonsense verse in his familiar 2-D style until James Murphy appears on the hook. "You want to do it, but you don't know what you doing baby," Murphy yelps -- and so goes the pattern until the 1:50 mark, when Outkast's Andre 3000 appears and takes us to another planet entirely. (A perfect world where he never got into movies and fans were given a beautiful new Outkast album every year.) "Every time we try, we get nowhere/ Wouldn't it be nice if we were just normal people," the MC croons before unleashing nearly two minutes of elastic rhymes.
In an interview with Billboard, Murphy said that the trio got together in London last September to write and record the track. "We didn't exchange any ideas at all [beforehand]," he said. "Damon was basically saying, 'Let's just get in a room,' which, even if it wasn't Damon Albarn, is a pretty convincing argument, really. To be honest, I was worried that I should prepare something, but went with it anyway."
