They cost millions of dollars to put together, and required months of preparation – but if you don't live in the States, you probably didn't catch the best (and worst) ads the Super Bowl had to offer Sunday night.
Luckily for us, the Internet exists. From vampires and Elton John to Ferris Bueller and Star Wars, here are the ads the critics dubbed the best:
According to the L.A Times, the ad for Dannon's Oikos Greek yogurt is a winner. In it, a smirking John Stamos continually steals a young woman's yogurt until she clocks him in the head. Wrote the L.A. Times: "It's hard to beat a good head-butt."
People gave top marks to four TV spots: Audi's Twilight/The Vampire Diaries spoofing ad; Matthew Broderick's "perfectly understated mini-performance" in Honda CR-V's much touted Ferris Bueller ad; TaxACT's uriniating child; and VW's Star Wars spot, which featured patrons of the Mos Eisley Cantina debating whether this year's puppy trimming down ad is more adorable than last year's Darth Vader kid.
USA Today was also a fan of VW's puppy Star Wars ad. Their picks, however, were made scientifically – by gathering an "ad panel" of 286 adult volunteers and "electronically [charting] their second-by-second reactions." The results proved one indisputable fact, however: people love dogs.
According to these nearly 300 brave men and women, Doritos' ad – which features a dog bribing a man, and which was made for only $20 -- made the most impact. The VW ad and Skechers' dog-racing promo rounded out USA Today's pooch-loving Top 3.
As for the night's biggest duds:
People pointed to H&M's "trying very hard to look uncomfortably ambivalent" David Beckham spot, Pepsi's "fussily conceived and designed " Elton John as king ad, and Old Navy's "too clever" Corporado ad.
