Lil Wayne Turns Up the (Radio) Rock

January 26, 2009

An April 7 release date for Lil Wayne's next album, Rebirth, has been set, reports Billboard -- but in case you were expecting Tha Carter IV, maybe you should take a listen to the new Wayne track that leaked online Sunday.

"Prom Queen" comes off like the Grammy frontrunner's bid to introduce Auto Tune to the Nickelback and David Cook set -- with Wayne singing about being ditched, "Sk8r Boi"-style, by a fickle high school girlfriend with excellent taste in "fancy underwear."

And while Wayne's never been shy of mixing genres in the past (see synthy pop-rock hit single "Let it Rock" off of Tha Carter III), reports are saying that Rebirth will be all about the rock.

Wayne's been talking about putting out a rock album for a while now, with the guitar-slinging rapper telling MTV News last fall that he was planning a major change for his next LP.

"This is something brand new, so we don't want it to be some experimental thing, 'cause some people are not gonna like this," he hinted to MTV in October.

A better cut of "Prom Queen" is set to debut on Wayne's MySpace Jan. 27, reports Billboard, with a live stream of his San Diego show also to be posted on the site tomorrow.
