Kanye West Inspired By Bakshi Cartoons (and Jetsons?) in New Video

November 10, 2008

It seems that Ralph Bakshi's American Pop has inspired more than a case of the munchies. Kanye West reportedly turned to the trippy animated flick as inspiration for his new video for "Heartless." Dude, if only you'd rented Cool World instead. Then, at least, we'd get a Brad Pitt cameo to go with the rotoscoped action.

Don't know what "rotoscoped" means? We'll let West explain, via his blog (West's trademark all caps removed for your reading pleasure):

"We recorded real people and then had 65 animators in Hong Kong hand draw over every cell," wrote West.

As per the rest of the rapper's blog entry, the clip's director, Hype Williams, introduced West to Bakshi's 1981 movie, American Pop -- which makes use of the same animation aesthetic. "Hype showed me the movie and I was sold," writes West.

Still, that doesn't explain the weird Jetsons paintings about 2 and a half minutes in. And where is Rosie's FACE?!

Fans will be able to get their hands on "Heartless" and the rest of the songs on West's upcoming album 808s and Heartbreak an eensy bit sooner than expected. As reported by Billboard today, the album's release has been bumped up a day -- from Nov. 25 to Monday, Nov. 24.
