Kanye West to Boycott Awards after He got 'Drunk on Adrenalin' and Made MTV Rant

November 7, 2006

Hip-hops most egotistical emcee, Kanye West, didn’t mean to steal headlines the world over when he launched into a tirade so profanity-laden that it would make Bob Saget blush at the MTV Europe Music Video Awards on Monday — he was just saying what he felt in his bombastic heart. And now the tantrum-prone rapper is vowing not to attend future award shows so he won’t be tempted to run his yapper again.

“Maaaan, I don't be doing this shit on purpose!” West tells MTV. “I was sitting there [thinking] like, ‘Just go up there and say what you feel.’"

It didn’t help matters that West had been sipping a bit of bubbly during the show.

“It was just out of raw emotion. I had a couple of drinks but I was more drunk with adrenaline,” he reveals. “I was drinking at the awards show because I feel so at home at awards shows. I live at awards shows!”

West says he’d heard rumours he was a fix to win best video and that people had been coming up to him and his entourage saying “we heard you gonna win.” But when the prize went to Justice vs. Simian’s "We Are Your Friends," West rushed the stage, ranting about how his video had cost a million dollars and featured Pamela Anderson, thus obviously making it more superior. But now the hit-maker is vowing to dodge all future award shows, despite his expressed love for them, in an attempt to avoid another such temper tantrum.

"Matter of fact, I'm not going to any more awards shows," he explains. "From now on, I got all the awards I need. I'm only making my music for the fans ... The streets know, and the fans know, that 'Touch the Sky' was killin' that video ... Don't even nominate my shit. Don't play with me. I don't need awards to validate me."
