Mother Mother have logged some 100+ shows and counting in 2009 (they wrap a tour with Matthew Good on Dec. 19). And if the Vancouver-based indie act’s years of sweat-drenched experience isn’t enough to convince you of their onstage mastery, they’ve even won a trophy as proof – the 2009 CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award for Best Live Act. Given their certifiable expertise, we asked the band’s frontman, Ryan Guldemond, to share his picks for the Top 5 shows he saw in 2009.
5. Rick Waines
Where: Media Club, Vancouver, B.C.
What was the most memorable part of the show? His pants and lyrics.
4. Hannah Georgas
Where: The Biltmore, Vancouver, B.C.
What was the most memorable part of the show? A long note of hers during the song "Shine."
3. Daredevil Christopher Wright
Where: Pianos, New York City
What was the most memorable part of the show? Midpoint of the set during the song "Acceptable Loss" -- the harmonies were immaculate and very moving.
2. Arkells
Where: Velvet Underground, New York City
What was the most memorable part of the show? A guitar solo towards the end.
1. Yellow Jacket Avenger
Where: The Sea Horse, Halifax, N.S.
What was the most memorable part of the show? At one point the lead singer screamed very unexpectedly. It wasn't like a Rod Stewart scream, but like a bat out of hell scream; not melodic, just anarchy.
