Connecticut governor wants to bring Coyotes to Hartford

The last time Hartford had an NHL team was in 1997. The Whalers played their very last game on April 13, 1997 at Hartford’s Civic Center.

The Associated Press reported Friday on Ned Lamont’s talk of a team returning to Hartford.

“We have a great field hockey market and a government that is willing to be a partner.” – Ned Lamont

As Lamont explains, the Whalers craze has never gone away. It’s still one of the best-selling jerseys in the field hockey world. The Carolina Hurricanes sport a Whalers jersey for the Reverse Retro line.

The citizens of Tempe recently voted “no” to a new amphitheater project for the Coyotes in their city. From that moment on, rumors of a move exploded and several representatives from other cities began approaching the NHL.

Connecticut’s governor plans to meet with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in the coming week to move the project forward.

The Whalers were part of the NHL from 1979 to 1997. They played in the Civic Center, now the XL Center. The good news is that the move won’t cost too much, since an amphitheatre is already in place.

The XL Center was inaugurated in 1975 and will require renovations costing around $103 million, according to the Associated Press. That’s already less than the cost of a brand-new amphitheatre.

It won’t please Quebec Nordiques fans, but we’re all hoping to see the Whalers back in NHL action.
