Interview: Marc Bergevin impressed Leafs management

In the end, Brad Treliving was hired as GM of the Leafs, but we know that Marc Bergevin was a serious candidate. Indeed, he spoke at length with Brendan Shanahan.

His presentation, which lasted a few hours, was well detailed and, in the end, he impressed the big boss.

Unfortunately, as Renaud Lavoie explains, Toronto’s upper management already had their man in Treliving.

If Treliving is the man for the job in the Queen City, Bergevin would have had the skills for the job too. After all, Toronto and Montreal are very similar on many levels. The Canadian pressure aspect is very present. That pressure is felt in Calgary, too, Treliving’s former hometown, but it’s felt a little less than in the other two cities.

As for Marc Bergevin, he seems to be back among the NHL’s DG candidates. After being fired by the CH, he went to California to help his good friend Rob Blake. Now that he’s rested, the Quebecker is ready to take on new challenges.

At the moment, the Pittsburgh Penguins are the only NHL team without a general manager. We know that MB has been interviewed there, but we have no further news. We also know that Kyle Dubas was named president of field hockey operations earlier today, and that one of his men is likely to follow him to Pittsburgh. Could Bergevin be on that list?

Will Georges Laraque and Elliotte Friedman, who have linked MB to the Penguins, be right in the end? To be seen. One thing’s for sure, Bergevin clearly wants another opportunity to show what he can do as a big boss.
