Wayne Gretzky didn’t hesitate to mock the Maple Leafs’ star players

The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs were Canada’s last hope for the Stanley Cup this season. But as we all know, the Cup won’t be coming north.

On the contrary: it’s really coming south.

We know that both teams had similar problems. There’s great talent up front, but it was the club’s depth and uncertainty in front of the net that hurt.

But there is one difference between the two teams: the Oilers’ stars showed up to work.

When you look at the way the Maple Leafs’ offensive stars played in the second round, you can see why the club is on vacation today.

And Wayne Gretzky wasn’t afraid to point that out.

On TNT, he saw Paul Bissonnette annoyed with the Oilers’ elimination. This stung the legend to the core and prompted #99 to retaliate by talking about the Maple Leafs.

I loved the fact that he talked about the guys being on the milk cartons to allude to the absence of the guys in the moments that were most important to the club.

What’s also ironic is that using the old milk carton analogy is good for the Maple Leafs, who wore the Dairy Farmers of Ontario logo on their jerseys this season.

I don’t know if he thought of it, but I hope he did. After all, it’s a good line that clearly has to whip the major stakeholders.
