Q&A with So You Think You Can Dance Canada's Kim and Cody

October 8, 2009

The further on So You Think You Can Dance Canada gets in the competition, the more unpredictable the results. While some dancers may be eliminated because their skills aren't up to par, other talented dancers can be voted off simply because their fan bases aren't as big as others'. One thing's for sure: one bad dance can be your downfall. That's what happened with Kim Gingras, 23, and Cody Bonnell, 19, who received the judges' harshest criticism this week, as the hip-hop dancers failed to make their waltz really shine. Despite good reviews for their hip-hop routine (and even though Gingras had never before been in the bottom), the pair was eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

Kim Gingras, 23
Montreal, Que.

You were eliminated even though you had never been in the bottom before.
It happens. First time and then I'm out. It's rough in a sense, but you never know what's going to happen. The voters, what Canada wants; you don't know.

What were you thinking last night?
I was really sad, obviously. You never want to go home. The training and the whole experience was amazing. And I was in the bottom with Melanie [Mah], and we've been roommates for the whole show, so it was hard for it to be both of us. You don't want to go, but you don't want the other one to go, either. It was a little hard.

Your waltz with Cody seems to be what sent you home; the judges didn't like it very much.
Yeah, I think so. I think the comments we got for the waltz brought us down. It was very hard because we’re two hip-hop dancers and everything about [the waltz] was very unnatural. There was a lot of concentration, from your feet to your steps to the posture and everything like that. It was a tough dance, but so much fun to learn. It was fun.

Even though you were eliminated, you get to go on tour with the rest of the Top 10.
I'm so excited about that.

Which routines are you hoping to do on the tour?
I would like to do my jazz-fusion with Everett – the one Sean Cheesman choreographed from last week. It was so great and a very fun piece to do; very different. I hope we'll be doing that one on tour.

Was that your favourite routine?
It's hard to say an actual favourite; obviously, they're all different. I loved doing Luther's hip-hop number with Emmanuel. I thought it was a moment to shine and show my talent and it was fun to perform. And the number I did with the girls last week, that was a lot of fun, too. It was really cool to be in a Girl Power situation, and we got great feedback from it.

What was the most important thing you learned from your time on the show?
The way to handle yourself, I think. I was really surprised with myself. You have to remind yourself, "You're here to dance and you love it, so just show your passion onstage." You have to have fun with it. Obviously you want to take it seriously but you need to enjoy the moment because it could be over in a second.

Other than your own elimination, which one surprised you the most?
The first week was a shocker – Taylor and Tatiana. I was friends with them and really like them as people, but their talent, oh my God. I know Canada didn't even see a fraction of what they can do. That was really hard.

Who else out of the Top 20 do you think should have gone further?
Daniel was a shocker – it was right before the cut for Top 10. It was really hard because he's a good friend of mine and we worked together in Montreal, so it was hard to see him go.

Now that you're gone, who do you think will win So You Think You Can Dance Canada?
Definitely Mel or Vincent. I hope they go far. I think they're amazing. Vincent and I were hoping we'd be dancing together next week because he's the only guy I hadn't partnered with yet. Oh, well, better luck next time. But I hope they both go far because they're such talented and beautiful people.

What's next for you?
Not sure yet. I definitely want to go out there and, maybe, not be in Montreal as much. I really enjoyed my time in Toronto and I see that there's a lot of dance stuff out here. I could use that – the contacts and the auditions coming up and things like that. I hope I'll be getting some calls or anything like that in my career. I want to work with that.

Cody Bonnell, 19
Unionville, Ont.

What was going through your mind when you were eliminated last night?
You know, it happened to fast; you're kind of upset at first because you're leaving the show, but I realized that I got farther than I ever thought I'd get and it was a great experience. I'm taking nothing but positive things from it, so it's all good.

How far did you think you would get?
I had no idea. I honestly took it week-by-week. The first week we were there, we were so nervous. I made it past the Top 20, to Top 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 – and I made it to the Top 8. I never had a mark I wanted to get to; I just took it one week at a time.

Were you expecting to go home last night?
No, not really. You never know what could happen because it's all in Canada’s hands. You have a bad week or a bad dance; anything can happen.

It seemed like your waltz with Kim was your downfall.
Yeah, it was. It was really hard. It's very unnatural. If you felt uncomfortable while you're doing it, if you feel uncomfortable in your posture, then you're doing it right, basically.

Did you and Kim have trouble clicking?
No, not at all. We were friends before we were partners and we always wanted to be partners throughout the show, so when she drew my name, we were both really excited and couldn't wait to start working on our dances.

You two seemed to enjoy your hip-hop dance to Bobby Brown's "Humpin' Around."
Oh, yeah! That was so much fun. It was such a high-energy dance and it was so tiring. Both of us, at the end of it, we'd always be lying on the ground after rehearsals. But it was so much fun.

Which routines are you hoping to do on the cross-Canada tour?
I would love to do that Bobby Brown hip-hop dance; so much fun. I guess I would love to be my contemporary with Melanie [Mah], because when we first started, we didn't really know each other, but now we've become the best of friends and we know we could do that dance so much better and be so much happier doing it. And my hip-hop with Melanie, too – actually, any hip-hop dance that I did on the show, I'd love to do again, just because I love doing it. I'd love the chance to show Canada what I can actually do.

What was your favourite moment from your time on the show?
Probably that first moment on stage. You're walk out there and you're standing there and a million things are running through your mind of what can go wrong, and all of a sudden, the music starts and everything just leaves your mind and you just dance. It's the best feeling ever.

How has it been to suddenly be a teen idol in Canada?
[Laughs] It's pretty cool. It's definitely something I wasn't used to before the show, but it's something that I've gotten used to. When you see the girls screaming your name, you just have to say thank you. I appreciate it so much because it's so nice of them to actually do that and I never thought anything like that would happen on the show.

It must be a little uncomfortable to have such young girls screaming and fawning over you, though.
Yeah, it gets pretty crazy sometimes. That's when you don't know how to deal with it, because it's so new, but you realize that they're just happy to see you because they love your dancing. I'm so thankful for that.

Of the dancers who didn't make the Top 10, who do you think deserved to go further?
Taylor and Tatiana. They were first to go and they were really strong dancers, and I wish they'd had a better chance to show Canada what they can really do. They're both phenomenal and I would have loved to see them go further.

Who are you rooting for to win So You Think You Can Dance Canada?
Definitely Melanie Mah. I would love to see her go all the way. We became so close and she's honestly such an amazing dancer. Anytime I watch her dance, I'm just mesmerized. Any dance, she transforms into every single character in every one of her dances. I'd love to see her take it.

What's next for you, other than the tour?
After the tour, I just want to keep dancing, taking classes and trying to do this professionally. I want to do some work here in Toronto and then go out to L.A. and take classes there and learn from people out there. This show has really made me realize that this is a passion that I want to do for the rest of my life, so I'd love to start my career.
