Spoiled rich kids make for entertaining television, and the CW is milking that cash cow for all it's worth. After finding rating success with last fall's Gossip Girl, the youth-oriented network is planning a contemporary spinoff of beloved teen soap Beverly Hills, 92010. Although The Hollywood Reporter reveals that 90210 brainchild Darren Star will not be involved, the spinoff does have an advantage: Rob Thomas, creator of the brilliant-but-cancelled Veronica Mars, will be in charge.
The original 90210 premiered on Fox in 1990, wowing audiences with its focus on ruffled blouses, Porsches and leading men with forehead wrinkles. The series went through many cast changes and even more outrageous plot lines before finally ending in 2000.
A pilot for the spinoff should be completed by the end of this month, but the CW didn't reveal whether any of the original 90210 cast would be involved. Of course, it's not as though the West Beverly High gang is all that busy these days - they could probably snag Tori Spelling for a bucket of chicken and a pack of cigarettes.
