Each week, Project Runway Canada mentor Brian Bailey reveals some of his thoughts and opinions about what went down on the runway. Here, the respected designer reflects on the Post-It challenge, in which the contestants had to create evening gowns made entirely out of the sticky paper squares.
Which of the judges' reactions surprised you the most this week?
Rita surprised me with her comments on Jessica's dress. I thought this dress was the antithesis of what Rita thought was good design, but this shows you should never assume anything with anyone as a surprise could be around the corner. Good for Rita for stepping way outside the box.
Who created your favourite design this week?
I loved Genevieve's combination of colour and texture. Post-it notes became marvels of sculpture in her hands.
Which contestant appeared to struggle the most with this challenge?
For Jason it was more than a struggle. I'm not even sure he knew where this train wreck came from, but there it was on the runway, in all its glory or lack thereof.
Which contestant improved the most this week?
Jessica improved the most because she realized that she could do better and started again.
How receptive was this week's losing contestant to your advice?
Jason didn't hear a word that I said, not even "Hello, Jason." I think a new friendship might have been in the way of his design sensibility.
If you were one of the designers, what would you have created for this challenge?
I would have created a strapless gown inspired by the word "strength." The foundation would have been organza, which would allow it to move like fabric. I would have used all one colour, perhaps bright pink, and kept the texture simple through the bodice with the bottom part of the dress covered in tone on tone floral for textural effect. However, I do think that Sunny, Jessica and Genevieve would have beaten me!
Did the contestants learn anything in this week's challenge that will help them in their fashion careers?
The contestants learned that the soul of great design is full of emotion. That, and wings do not work on dresses and yellow caterpillars shouldn't be on the train of a fluorescent pink dress.
