It looks as though Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay and Ryan will be spending more time in high school than the casts of Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210 combined. High School Musical 3: Senior Year won't be released until fall but Disney executives are already writing High School Musical 4, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't high school, you know, end after senior year? They should call the next sequel DeVry Technical Institute Musical or Hollywood Upstairs Medical College Musical.
While HSM3 will be the first of the hit tween series to be released into movie theatres, HSM4 will most likely return to its roots as a made-for-television movie. The first two installments in the series broke ratings records for the Disney Channel: High School Musical attracted 7.7 million viewers in the U.S. while the sequel brought in 18.6 million viewers, making it the most-watched basic-cable telecast in history. The movie franchise made teen idols out of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens virtually overnight.
Although Disney Channel Worldwide president Rich Ross confirmed that HSM4 is in the works, he didn't reveal whether Efron, Hudgens or any of the other cast members would be returning.
"Are we going to have all the cast back? Probably not," Ross said. "Will we have some of them? I hope so."
At the rate Disney is churning out the family-friendly flicks, we'll be watching Hospice Musical within the next few years.
