Ben Silverman Quits as NBC Universal Co-Chair

July 27, 2009

After a little more than two years on the job, Ben Silverman is stepping down as NBC Universal Entertainment Co-Chairman, reports the New York Times. The so-called TV wunderkind is leaving to form a new media company with InterActiveCorp CEO Barry Diller, a job that will surely make Silverman a lot more money and cause him much less stress.

Although Silverman will stay on at NBC for the next several weeks to help the fourth-place network launch its fall schedule, his position has been given to NBC Universal Television Entertainment president and CEO Jeff Gaspin, who will report directly to NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker. (If anyone could explain to us the office hierarchy of NBC Universal, we'd appreciate it. So "president" goes below "co-chairman," which goes below "CEO"? We're so glad we ignored our parents and skipped out on business school.)

Silverman, 38, was brought on to run NBC Universal Entertainment in 2007 after producing hit shows like The Office, Ugly Betty and The Biggest Loser; he also won plenty of good karma by saving Friday Night Lights from cancellation. However, of the 25 shows that have premiered during his reign, only 5 have survived; of those, the only scripted series are Chuck, Southland and Parks and Recreation.
