CBS Puts a Stake Through Moonlight's Heart

May 13, 2008

It looks as though Moonlight won't be seeing the light of day. CBS won't be announcing their fall schedule until tomorrow, but inside sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that the network will not be renewing its Friday night vampire drama.

Moonlight has been on the brink of cancellation for its entire first season, to the point that the show's enthusiastic fan base organized a nationwide blood drive (get it?) to promote their beloved series and to convince CBS to give it another chance. But Moonlight has been unable to hold onto the lead-in provided by Ghost Whisperer, with last Friday's episode attracting a measly 2.0 rating for the 18 to 49 demographic in the U.S. Executives at the eye network are also probably resisting any fan campaigns after they were convinced to renew Jericho for a second season and were rewarded with even worse ratings than before.

Once Moonlight is off the air, television will be a little less beautiful without several gratuitous shots of Alex O'Loughlin's bare chest. On the bright side, anyone yearning for a shirtless Jason Dohring can simply watch their Veronica Mars DVDs over again.
