No Space for Wright on U.S. Spaced

October 30, 2007

Cross your fingers and pray it's as good as The Office.

UK comedy cult-hit Spaced will be remade for American TV. The show, which was created by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright -- the team behind Shaun of the Dead and this summer's Hot Fuzz -- is being redone for Fox by writer Adam Barr (Will &Grace) and producer McG (The O.C.).

Variety suggests that Pegg and Wright's level of involvement in the U.S. treatment is unconfirmed. Talk about an understatement. In reference to the news, Wright posted the following today (Oct. 30) on his MySpace blog:

"No one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear. …I can confirm too, that Simon was never contacted either. I don't really want to get involved at all, but it infuriates me that they would a) never bother to get in touch but still b) splash me and Simon's names all over the trade announcements and infer that we're involved in the same way Ricky [Gervais] & Steve [Merchant] were with The Office."

If you haven't caught it in reruns on Showcase, Spaced revolves around two slacker-ish strangers who pretend to be a married couple so they can score a to-die-for apartment. Pegg and Jessica Hynes both starred and co-wrote the series with Wright at the helm.

The original was stuffed with references to pop culture and geek lore -- from the Evil Dead trilogy to The X Files. Fans are speculating Fox's choice to resurrect the series is a grab at TV's current geek-love affair with new shows about nerds such as Big Bang Theory and the McG-produced Chuck.
