OMG! Is it actually possible the CW is passing on its much-hyped Gossip Girl spinoff? It seems that even GG herself can't get a straight answer.
The spinoff, starring Brittany Snow as a young, rebellious Lily Rhodes (who, as you probably already know, grows up to be Lily van der Woodsen, Serena's mom), seemed like a no-brainer for the CW, combining the guilty pleasure of Gossip Girl with the horrendous hair and fashion of the 1980s. Even the pilot, which is being presented as a flashback episode of Gossip Girl next week, received plenty of good buzz.
But Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the show is dead in the water, before the backdoor pilot has even had a chance to air.
"Put a fork in it. It's done," wrote Deadline's Nikki Finke. “"ut even though I heard [Warner Bros. president] Peter Roth loved its yesteryear vibe, the show went from hot, to lukewarm, to 'fading but wouldn't count out,' to now dead."
However, other insiders at the CW told E! News that while the spinoff's future is anything but certain, nothing has been decided yet – and that network execs are actually having a difficult time deciding.
"Nothing is dead," said E!'s source.
The problem seems to be that the network only has three prime time hours to fill for next season, and since the Melrose Place reboot appears to be a sure thing, each pilot for the CW is actually fighting for one of only two spots. Aside from the Gossip Girl spinoff, the group of pilots includes The Beautiful Life, starring Mischa Barton, and Vampire Diaries (and we all know how hot vampires are right now). Of course, it's hard to ignore the power of anything Gossip Girl-related, so it's entirely possible the pilot will still be picked up.
In happier news, E! News also reports Privileged is probably getting a second season! Hurray!
