Canada No Like-y Strike-y, Bionic Woman and Battlestar Galactica Shut Down

November 16, 2007

It seems that eight-balls of coke aren't the only things that have gotten stuck at the border. Writers strike complications have been delayed crossing into Canada until now. TV series being shot in Vancouver have shut down early due to the writers strike.

NBC's Bionic Woman was the first to quit production on Nov. 9, Vancouver publicist Bill Vigars told the Hollywood Reporter. Production was originally set to continue until Dec. 12, but a lack of scripts caused the premature halt. Another sci-fi drama, Battlestar Galactica, has also run out of fresh material, and is said to wrap today (Nov. 16).

Other shows being shot in B.C. include Aliens in America, Supernatural, Men in Trees and Smallville. They've yet to be affected, but Vigars told Canadian Press that he expects these shows to also shut down early should the strike continue. For each show that stops production, Vigars estimates 150 jobs are lost, not counting those in areas such as catering or trucking.

Those working in the film industry say that they’re frustrated with this turn of events.

"None of this stuff is in our control. There's no way we can have an effect," Don Ramsden, a business agent for West-Coast cinematographers told the CBC. "This battle is happening on the streets of New York City and the streets of Los Angeles. We're collateral damage."
