Former Ex-List Boss Reveals What Would Have Happened

November 17, 2008

An unfortunate part of almost every television season is when a series is suddenly cancelled before it can wrap up its story lines, leaving its viewers forever wondering, "Who was John Doe? Did Angela Chase break up with Jordan Catalano and get together with Brian Krakow? Is Agent Cooper still trapped in the Black Lodge?"

Luckily, in this magical age of the Internet, a show's untimely end doesn’t mean that viewers will never find out what was in store for its characters. Take The Ex-List, the freshman romantic comedy that CBS cancelled late last month. Main character Bella (Elizabeth Reaser) was searching for her soul mate, who was someone she had dated in the past – and if she didn't walk down the aisle and swap vows within a year, poor Bella would be alone forever.

Sadly, the eye network yanked The Ex-List from its schedule before Bella found her one and only, leaving the show's few viewers hanging. But former showrunner Diane Ruggiero (who quit after six episodes) was only too happy to reveal what would have happened if the show hadn't been given the axe. (Spoiler alert! Stop reading if you don't want to know.)

"My plan was to end the first season with Bella getting married," Ruggiero told E! News last week. "Marina (the psychic) told her that she already dated The One and that if she didn't marry within the year she'd never marry. She never said she had to marry The One within the year."

Um, we'd just like to point out that we called this one way back in August. What, did you think we wouldn't notice the vague wording of Marina's prophecy? Clearly they didn't anticipate how awesome we are.

So who, then, was Bella's soul mate? Well, that would be Augie (Adam Rothenberg), one of Bella's best friends who – eep – is in a serious relationship with Vivian, one of Bella's other best friends. Scandal!

"My plan was to have Bella hook up with an old college ex around episode 13… She tells College Ex about the prophecy. He says they should get married. They head to Vegas," Ruggiero went on. "Right after they tie the knot College Ex is telling a stranger at the casino the story of how he met Bella. He mentions that they were both dating someone else. Bella is confused. She was single when she met him—we flash back to a college party—Bella and Augie enter. She sees someone she used to date and doesn't want to appear to be at the party alone. She tells Augie that he is her boyfriend for the night. Basically, Bella gets married then, moments later, realizes that Augie is the one."

Ruh roh!

Oh, and for all you die-hard Ex-List fans who still haven't gotten over its cancellation, E! News also reports that the show is still in production and is actively casting for more episodes, indicating that never-before-seen installments will be put on the DVD box sets. The Ex-List is like the former lover who just won't take a hint.
